Civic body sits least bothered as congress grass spreads in city

Even as congress grass is growing in various areas in the city, the municipal corporation (MC) seems to be least bothered about its ill effects, as it is considered one of the seven most harmful weeds in the world and a major biological pollutant.

The grass can be seen growing at vacant plots, footpaths and other places. It is harmful to the people suffering from allergic respiratory problems, contact dermatitis and causes mutagenicity in human and livestock.

This wild grass causes acute allergy among children known as papular urticaria. Phypoto demitizers is another disease, which is caused by the grass, and is very harmful to the human being.

According to experts, during rainy season the plight doubles, as the weeds grow at a voracious rate thereby causing problems to the people living nearby.

“The local body seems to be least bothered to clear the grass even after knowing ill effects. Shockingly, congress grass has grown in many children’s parks, hence exposing children to harmful diseases. Also, there are chances of snakes and other reptiles hiding in this wild grass,” lamented Jasmine Kaur, a Model Town resident.

There are many like Jasmine who have echoed a similar view and are of opinion that the MC must get these harmful grasses removed soon.

A Dugri resident, Simranjit Singh, who is also an agriculturalist, rued congress grass was one of the most devastating weeds in the world.

Mayor Harcharan Singh Gholwaria had said he had been arranging machines to remove the congress grass, as he had already taken demo of some of the machines from a few companies. He said the problem of congress grass would be eradicated soon.

Dr Bimal Kanish from Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here said: “Congress grass causes allergic disease that spreads by physical contacts. This disease is increasing day by day and there are many cases in our city.”
