A Class-9 student of Dasmesh Public School, Dhariwal, was found dead in her house at Jiwanwal Babri village near here on Friday.
She had apparently come back home from school by an auto rickshaw at about 3.30 pm, and her father who came home at around 5.30 pm found her dead.
She was an adopted child and lived with her father. The biological mother has alleged that the father raped and killed the girl.
The mother, accompanied by about a hundred people, met Gurdaspur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Toor on Saturday.
SSP Toor told HT he had formed a Special Investigation Team led by superintendent of police (SP) (Detective) JS Kainth to look into the case.
The SSP said the auto rickshaw driver who had dropped the girl home on Friday had been questioned. The staff of a nearby private hospital with whom the deceased had been friendly, and the inmates of the Government Old Age Home close to the girl's house had also been questioned, he said.
He also said the dog squad and the forensic department had been involved in the investigation, and that the police had found some clues.
Gurdaspur senior medical officer Dr Sudhir said an autopsy had been done at the Gurdaspur civil hospital on Saturday, and samples had been sent to the forensic laboratory at Kharar to ascertain the cause of death.
Meanwhile, Gurdaspur sadar police registered an FIR against unidentified person(s) under sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code.
