A day after a Class-9 student allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in Khudd Mohalla, the Division Number 3 police have arrested her paternal uncle, Karamjit Singh (42), for abetment to suicide.

A case against Singh was registered following a complaint by Inderjeet Kaur, mother of the deceased.

Inderjeet alleged the accused used to hurl insults at her and her daughter, Amandeep Kaur. She claimed that Singh was cursing her on Sunday night. Meanwhile, Amandeep objected and intervened in the matter, following which the accused misbehaved with her too.

Thereafter, in a fit of rage, Amandeep went to the second floor of the house and hanged herself with the ceiling fan, Inderjeet claimed.

Inspector Brij Mohan, station house officer (SHO), Division Number 3 police station, said following the statement of Inderjeet, the police registered a case against Karamjit and arrested him on Tuesday from Khudd Mohalla.

Karamjit, an electrician, had been living with Inderjit for the past nine years since she got separated from her husband Baljit Singh.
