Within three weeks, a special committee will submit a report on the major problems of north Indian farmers to the all-India Congress president, Sonia Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi has constituted the team on Monday after her meeting with office-bearers of the Consortium of Indian Farmers Association. "Union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh, state Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar, Haryana parliamentarian Deepinder Singh Hooda, and Congess leaders JK Wasan, Ajit Jogi, CP Joshi, and Renuka Chowdary will supervise the committee," association president Satnam Singh Behru said here on Monday.

The association has demanded a special package to the farmers of Punjab and Haryana as payback supporting the national endeavor of adopting innovative practices and increasing food production. "In this process, farmers are compelled to use more water, which has depleted the water level in the two states, while the overkill of fertilisers and pesticides have affected soil health," said Behru. "The governments are indifferent to the plight of farmers, which is reflected in the rising input cost."

Many farmers of Punjab had committing suicide in the past 10 years because of debt and the government's bad policies, said Behru, condemning the Centre for no increasing the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat. Farmers were yet to get regular electricity for the promised number of hours, he added.
