The Shiromani Akali Dal in its reply to a notice by the district election officer has said the chief minister’s remarks seeking funds for the election campaign of SAD-BJP candidate from Jalandhar segment Pawan Kumar Tinu during a meeting with industrialists were in a “lighter vein”.
The party in its reply further says when the chief minister was saying this there was an “environment of laughter” at the meeting.
“Our party respects the model code of conduct of conduct and the chief minister’s remarks did not violate it,” it said. District election officer Varun Roojam said, “I have yet to check the party’s reply. Further course of action will be decided on Tuesday.”
On Sunday, the chief minister in his defence had claimed that every political party collected funds and he never intended to violate the model code of conduct.
The district election officer had asked the party to send its reply within 24 hours of issuance of the notice.
The Shiromani Akali Dal had organised the meeting at Unison Engineering Industries near Pathankot Bypass Chowk in Jalandhar on April 11 where the alleged remarks were made by the chief minister.
