Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar has given approval to abolish semester system from Class 9 to 12 in all schools in the state from next year.
Stating this on Monday, education minister Ram Bilas Sharma said though the semester system in Class 9 and 11 had been abolished from the current year, the system would be continued for Class 10 and 12 this year as the students had studied as per semester system in their previous classes, Class 9 and 11, during the 2014-15 academic session.
He said that the department would conduct monthly tests for each class from Class 1 to 8 and the semester system would not be followed in these classes.
During the interaction session with representatives of all teachers associations and unions with Khattar on April 24, , there was unanimous opinion to abolish the semester system in schools.
This issue was also discussed in the meeting of Board of Secondary Education, Haryana on May 8, There was broad consensus that semester system should be abolished because there was unnecessary wastage of time of teachers in additional examination duties and examining of papers for 1st semester of Classes 9 to 11 during September and October every year.
Due to this, the teachers were not available for teaching the students of Classes 9 and 11 during these two months. It was also emphasised that CBSE too did not have any semester system.
