Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa on Wednesday said chief minister Parkash Singh Badal was not serious about the longstanding demand of transferring Chandigarh to Punjab and his recent demanded of the Union Territory from Prime Minister Narendra Modi was politically motivated.
“I fail to understand that with what face the chief minister is raking up this issue. The BJP raised the issue after forming a government in Haryana and now the chief minister is demanding Chandigarh. I want to ask him why he did not raise the issue till now,” questioned Bajwa, while talking to reporters on sidelines of his second day of mass contact programme in Jalandhar.
The PPCC chief alleged that Parkash Singh Badal was the person who opposed the Rajiv-Longowal Accord inked in 1985, of which shifting of Chandigarh to Punjab was a part.
“While as CM for years, Badal never showed sincerity to raise this demand. Now suddenly, when BJP raked up the issue in a bid to earn political brownie points, the CM was asking Modi to transfer Chandigarh to Punjab. The CM must call for an all-party meeting on the issue and take each MP from Punjab along with him to meet Modi over the issue,” said Bajwa.
