The doctors at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) have given a new lease of life to a 52-year-old woman, who walked in with inability to eat anything.
According to the hospital, Kamaljeet Kaur was unable to eat as she had an abnormal origin in the right subclavian artery. This was travelling behind the food pipe causing obstruction, therefore she could not eat.
Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, head, cardio vascular endovascular and thoracic surgery, CMCH, Ludhiana, explained that the condition was a rare one. Dr Bedi said it was a serious condition as the patient was in imminent danger of malnutrition as no food was going into the stomach.
“Additionally, another anomaly was that the course of the abnormal artery was unusual as instead of passing in the neck, it was coursing in the chest itself. This added to the complexity of the problem as the right chest of the patient would also have to be entered,” he said.
Dr Bedi explained, “A marathon surgery was done in which firstly the artery was exposed in the neck. Then it was disconnected from its abnormal origin in the chest. This cured the obstruction. However, a new source of flow to the hand was required. The right hand would otherwise turn black.
Also, as a major brain artery (the vertebral artery) was originating from the abnormal artery, if flow to this was not re-established, the patient could suffer a brain stroke. So the disconnected artery was re-connected to the carotid artery in the neck. This established a normal circulation.”
According to the hospital, the surgery went well and Kamaljeet was now able to eat. The other members of the surgery team were Dr A Joseph, Dr AnishVerghese, Dr SheetalGarg, Dr Melchi, Dr Amol, Dr Sheriff and Dr A Puliyeli.
