CMCH opens dialysis care centre

A peritoneal dialysis care centre (PDCC) was inaugurated at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here on Saturday.
The centre was inaugurated by Dr Vijay Obed, deputy director, CMCH.
Dr Obed said, “The peritoneal dialysis care centre is one of the first to be opened in Punjab. Till now, this facility was only available at PGIMER, Chandigarh.”
With this centre, the CMCH has become one of the few centres that offers all three modalities of renal replacement therapy for end-stage renal disease, consisting of blood dialysis, home dialysis and renal transplantation in a well-structured manner.
“The peritoneal dialysis is a comparatively new concept, but patient friendly,” said Dr Jasmine Das, in-charge of the centre.
“Under this concept, patients would be able to do dialysis at their homes, without any side effects,” said Dr Jasmine.
She also added that in haemodialysis, there were many threats such as blood infections etc.
It was costly and time consuming but in peritoneal dialysis, there are less chances of blood infection and people can do it at their homes and is economical.
Dr Jasmine said, “Dialysis is a lifelong chronic disease and its treatment must be patient friendly at home and in the community only, and peritoneal dialysis is based on all these basics.”
Dr Timothy Rajamanikam, head, nephrology department, CMCH, said, “This is preferable for young and elderly patients who need dialysis at home. The studies shown that this process has give n better lifestyle to patients, as they have no compulsion to visit a hospital, except for regular check-up visit.”
Dr Timothy added, “Complications are less in this process. Hospitals are already overburdened these days, so such programmes would benefit both patients as well as hospitals.”
“Our PD programme is having a dedicated room, where all PD-related education and training will be given.
Besides, we also have a dedicated PD nurse who manages the manual and electronic database of patients,” said Dr Das.
Dr Das said, “We have launched a book, “Standards of Care in Peritoneal Dialysis (SOCPD)”, which has protocols and guidelines practised internationally,” giving more infor mation regarding the centre.
