Cold wave intensifies in Himachal, dry weather ahead

Fresh snow spell in some parts of the state brought down the mercury in the state’s capital town, Shimla, which recorded a minimum of -0.2°C on Wednesday.

Several parts of the state were bereft of snow but it has certainly brought the temperatures down in Himachal Pradesh. Keylong recorded the lowest temperature with 11°C. Shimla recorded 2 cm of snowfall while Mashobra recorded 2 cm and Kalpa recorded 3 cm.

Sundernagar recorded a temperature of 1.6°C, Bhuntar 0.9°C, Kalpa -5°C, Dharamshala 5.4°C, Una 7.3°C, Nahan 5.5°C, Palampur 0.5°C, Dalhousie -0.2°C, Solan 0.7°C, Chamba 0.2°C, Manali -4.4°C, Kangra 2°C, Bilaspur 2.7°C, Hamirpur 5.2°C and Mandi recorded 3.6°C.

The Shimla meteorological centre has predicted dry weather in the city till January 26. Centre director Manmohan Singh said the weather is predicted to remain dry. “Due to bleak western disturbance, there was mild snowfall on Tuesday,” he said. In next five to seven days, no fresh western disturbance is expected to hit the region.

Weather forecast worries apple farmers

Apple growers were hopeful of more snowfall after it started on Tuesday. The fresh spell brought down the temperature which is favourable for apple orchards. A normal apple tree requires around 800 chilling hours where temperature should be less than 7°C and above zero degree.
