The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union on Wednesday threatened to boycott the July 3 panchayat elections if the state government failed to pay their pending dues.

Union's former district president Prof Pawan Kumar Sharma said that its members were assigned duties during the recent zila parishad and block samiti elections and even during counting of votes, but had not been paid remunerations even after the passage of one month.

Seeking immediate release of their dues, the college teachers also met with Batala SDM JS Grewal and appraised him of the matter. The SDM assured the teachers that all their dues would be cleared within a week but to no avail, Sharma claimed.

He further said that the state government was also violating the Punjab and Haryana high court orders while deploying teachers on election duty.

He also demanded exemption from poll duty for a spouse in couple cases so that they cojld look after their families.
