Though Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, stands second in the country when it comes to productivity of medical research papers, in the past 40 years (since 1975), the institute could produce only 140 publications that have 100 or more citation impact (papers that were cited in other research publications).

Among medical institutes, the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, tops the list, with around 250 high-impact research publications in the same period.

In an internal exercise carried out by the PGI to evaluate research productivity at the institute, h-index has been used as a parameter to reach on the said conclusion.

As per the findings, among the medical institutes, AIIMS stood first with h-index at 183 and was followed by PGI with h-index 111. Scientific search engines like Scopus and Google Scholar were used to find out the most-cited papers of the institute.

Of these 140 high-impact publications, there are large number publications that don’t fall under the category of research papers, but are actually review articles or case reports. Even among top five, one is a case report and another is a review article. The institute produces around 1,000 research publications every year.

Then there are research papers for which research was carried out outside the PGIMER or were written with international collaborations.

Interestingly, among the top five cited papers, PGIMER director Dr YK Chawla is one of the authors of two of these papers.

A long way to go

Though nationally the institute looks good when it comes to research, when it is compared to international institutes, it has a long way to go.

According to same parameters applied by the PGI, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has citation impact of 481 and the New York University School of Medicine has 294, which are among the top medical institutes in the world.

What is h-index

The h-index attempts to measure both productivity and citation impact of the publications. The index is based on the most-cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other publications. The index can also be applied to the productivity and impact of a scholarly journal.
