For the death of two girls in a hit-and-run incident involving a VIP's relative, their families have received Rs 2 lakh each as compensation from the chief minister's fund.
Sunita and Anuradha of Gobindpur Khun Khun were killed when Ravi Sher Singh Josh, nephew of chief parliamentary secretary Mohinder Kaur Josh, allegedly ran his Maruti Gypsy car over them on November 17.
Deputy commissioner Deepinder Singh on Saturday handed over the compensation cheques to the aggrieved families and offered them condolences on behalf of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.
The DC also handed over a cheque for Rs 50,000 to the parents of Priya, who is under treatment in a private hospital after receiving critical injuries in the accident.
Member of parliament Santosh Chowdhary, former legislator Ram Lubhaya, and Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) leader Gurdip Singh Khun Khun were present. Political parties and local people had taken up the issue in a big way and forced the government to pay compensation to the victims' families.
They had also organised a massive protest to ask for the arrest of the suspect under Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
