Condemning the proposal of the Punjab government to build a five-star hotel on the land of the Circuit House and the PWD Resthouse, Congress leaders here said on Tuesday that the party would raise its voice against the "unfavourable" policies of the state government.

In a press release issued here, senior Congress leader and Amritsar North constituency in-charge Karamjit Singh Rintu said that though the central government had not announced a financial emergency in Punjab, the financial crisis in the state showed that there were conditions under which a financial emergency could be imposed.

"Poll time promises made to the public have still not been fulfilled. Now the Punjab government is going to sell prime land in the state, which is not acceptable to the Congress. We intend to protest against it," he said.

Rintu alleged that the government was fooling the public by proposing a public-private partnership (PPP) model. "This hotel would not be constructed on PPP model, but would be governed by the ruling alliance in the state," he said.

Stating that the Circuit House and the PWD Resthouse were heritage buildings, Rintu said that such buildings should be preserved as these had now become a rarity in Punjab.

"Political, social and many more activities are regularly organised in the premises of these buildings," he said, adding that he would meet the top brass of the Congress and discuss the matter with them.
