Congress leaders of the Majha belt have criticised yoga guru Baba Ramdev's support to construction of the Operation Bluestar memorial in Harmandar Sahib.

In a joint statement party leaders, including Gurdaspur district Congress committee chief and Dera Baba Nanak MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Fatehgarh Churian MLA Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa have asked the yoga guru whether he would also support a memorial for Pakistan-backed terrorists killed in Jammu and Kashmir.

"The Baba is either trying to appease the Akalis to get some favours or he is trying to win over forces who are a threat to the unity and integrity of the nation," the statement reads. "After having failed to garner support for his so called fight against corruption, he is now looking for support from gun-toting militants."

The Congress leaders said such "irresponsible" statements made by the Baba would encourage anti-national elements. They advised him to "visit the families of those who have been affected by the terrorist violence in Punjab and listen to their grievances rather than talking in an irresponsible manner".

"Will he support a memorial for those who were killed by terrorists in Punjab or in Jammu and Kashmir," the party leaders asked. "Such statements only drive a wedge between communities."

The leaders wanted the Bharatiya Janata Party, which they said was lending indirect support to the Baba's August 9 anti-corruption rally, to release a statement on his support to the memorial.
