Congress legislator (MLA) from Guru Har Sahai Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi ridiculed Akali leaders Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Prem Singh Chandumajra for staging a dharna at the Indo-Pak international border near Ferozepur on Monday against the drug menace in Punjab.

In a press release issued here, Sodhi charged that these two leaders had never had the courage to raise this issue in Parliament.

Why they had avoided to raise this issue is a mystery which they ought to reveal to the people. He said it was the Congress party that first raised this issue, but now in a crude manner, the SAD is endeavouring to hijack it, alleged Sodhi.

He said the Akalis were in the habit of deflecting the attention of the people from the real issue of mis-governance, non-performance, non-fulfilment of the promises made to the people during the 2007 and 2012 polls including the creating of one lakh additional jobs for the youth, increase in the pensions for the elderly and widows, Shagun scheme, free education and free distribution of cycles to girl students, distribution of free lap tops, besides giving good governance with zero tolerance of corruption.

"Throwing aspersions on the para military forces, who are guarding our borders round the clock under highly hostile conditions at a great risk to their lives, cannot be justified under any circumstances," said Sodhi.

Politicising such a sensitive issue is highly deplorable and unpatriotic and amounts to demoralising the para military forces, he said.

"The Akali Dal government's frequent statements maligning neighbouring states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan for allowing cultivation of narcotics is a lame excuse", he said.

"The BJP is indulging in doublespeak, running with the hare and hunting with the hounds," he stated.

Sodhi advised BJP leaders in Punjab to be honest to the people of Punjab by either siding with the Akalis wholeheartedly or leave their company and tread their independent line.
