Congress MLA and president of the district Congress committee (rural), Hardyal Singh Kamboj, sat on a hunger strike on Monday in front of the sub-divisional magistrate's office to protest against the lack of basic amenities for residents of Rajpura here.

Kamboj, along with his party workers, slammed the municipal council for not addressing the problems of the residents, even after repeated written requests to officials concerned. He said the residents and members of the Rajpura block Congress committee had handed over a memorandum to the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) and administrator of the municipal council GK Jain on December 17 but to no avail.

The MLA also raised the issue of wrong wards formation and said the action of the executive officer of the council in the ward formation was condemnable as it was under the authority of a director-level officer at Chandigarh. Kamboj said the residents of Rajpura had been facing acute shortage of drinking water and unhygienic living conditions due to mismanagement of solid waste.
