Congress workers and leaders led by Member Parliament Ashwani Kumar and former union law minister protested against the alleged anti-farmer and callous attitude of the Centre and the Punjab government towards the plight of the farmers, after the loss and destruction suffered by the Rabi (mostly wheat) crop was destroyed by the untimely and heavy rains in the state.

The Congress workers also blocked traffic for a few minutes on the Grand Trunk road near the Pawan Kumar Government ITI in Gurdaspur on Saturday.

Dr Kumar reminded the people of the struggle for India's freedom led by Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh who had exhorted the farmers to fight for their economic and political rights.

He said that the 'Pagri Sambhal Jatta' song had given a huge filip to the movement of the Indians against the oppressive British Government.

Dr Kumar added that a similar sentiment was emerging in the country and criticised the Akali-BJP government for supporting the 'oppressive' Land Acquisition Ordinance brought in by the BJP led central government.

He said that the voice of the farmers of Punjab raised together would shake the foundation of the central and state governments.

Dr.Kumar earlier visited the villages Hardan, Lolenangal, Adian, Qadianwal, Varsola, Khushipur, Dorangla and Thamman.
