Cong puts up a united face as Jakhar files papers

punjab Updated: Apr 10, 2014 08:19 IST

The Congress presented a united show as party nominee from Ferozepur parliamentary seat Sunil Jakhar filed his nomination papers on Wednesday. The entire senior leadership accompanied him during a road show organised on the occasion, but former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar who had unsuccessfully contested as party nominee thrice from Ferozepur was conspicuous by his absence.

Jakhar was accompanied by Congress MLAs Gurmit Sodhi, Parminder Singh Pinki, Karan Brar, Mohammad Sadiq, former ministers Bal Mukand Sharma and Hans Raj Jossan, former Punjab Youth Congress chief Raminder Awla and former CPS Mohinder Rinwa. He paid obeisance at the historical Gurdwara Saragarghi and later addressed a gathering on a road side before reaching the local DC office in a procession to submit his nomination papers.

Seeing party leaders at one platform, Congress workers were ecstatic. “If the entire leadership remains united as they have shown today, nothing can stop Jakhar from winning,” said Naresh Sharma, a Congressman.

Jakhar said his main motive was to get the Hussainiwala border open for free trade and also get the Karachi-Bathinda railway line on track as it used to be before independence.

Meanwhile, the Congress procession created a chaos-like situation on the Ferozepur-Moga road, leaving commuters in the lurch for hours.
