In a major embarrassment to the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal, the Congress managed to secure the post of Sultanpur Lodhi municipal council president with the support of an Akali councillor and an Independent, despite successfully postponing the elections twice.
Vinod Kumar Gupta, who contested as SAD candidate from ward 4, switched sides to the Congress and was elected as the president for the second time.
Sunita Rani Dhir, Independent winner from ward 3, retained the post of the vice-president after supporting the Congress.
The swearing-in ceremony of the president was held on Sunday on the civic body premises, officiated by Sultanpur Lodhi sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Rabinderjit Singh Brar and tehsildar Seema Singh. All the newly elected councillors of 13 wards took oath of office.
The election for the president were scheduled on March 9 but was delayed by the SDM claiming the authorities had failed to notify all the councillors about the same and postponed it to March 14.
On Saturday, the elections were again postponed for Sunday, after a notice from the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) claiming that they did not have adequate force to hold the proceedings.
Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Navtej Singh Cheema said the ruling party deliberately postponed the function to elect the president as the Congress was getting majority.
