Cong seeks CBI probe into custody killing

The opposition in Congress has demanded a CBI probe into the gruesome custody killing of Bikramjit Singh, an inmate of the Amritsar central jail, by men in uniform who are supposed to be custodians of law and order.

“The shocking cold-blooded murder has exposed the Punjab Police as a gang of ‘supari’ killers in uniform”, alleged Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira.

Bikramjit was kidnapped from the Guru Nanak Dev hospital here on May 5 and on May 10, the police claimed that he died after questioning in police custody and his body was thrown into a canal, from where it was recovered on May 8.

The inmate was admitted to the hospital for the treatment of a back problem and as per police claims, he was ‘picked up’ by the police as it had information of his being involved in drug smuggling, despite being lodged in jail.

In a statement released here on Saturday, Khaira said that the Congress “outrightly trashes, debunks and rejects the cock and bull story” presented by Jatinder Singh Aulakh, police commissioner of Amritsar, fixing responsibility on 12 junior-level police officers on charges of kidnapping, murder, destroying evidence and criminal conspiracy. “Can ASIs, head constables and constables have the audacity to commit such a heinous crime, unless shielded and patronised by police and political hierarchy?” he asked. Khaira referred to the rivalry between the families of the deceased Bikramjit Singh and an Akali leader Gurdial Singh, who was shot dead along with four other persons of Algaon Kothi village in Taran Tarn district in 2002.

The family of victim Bikramjit, in their petition before the Punjab and Haryana high court, have alleged that his murder is a result of a deep-rooted hatched by the family of slain Gurdial Singh and a senior ranking police officer posted in Chandigarh, he added while pointing out that the at the time of the murder in 2002, the officer in question was posted as DSP at Bhikhiwind.

Khaira also claimed that this particular officer is often described as the ‘blue-eyed boy’ of former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini and has been involved in other controversial cases being investigated by the CBI. This same police officer was beaten up by a former Akali leader, the late Maninder Singh alias Sunny Johar at Ludhiana last year, due to a property dispute, he pointed out while also referring to some senior leaders being framed in false criminal cases by the officer at the instance of his political and police bosses.

“It is highly imperative that the real conspirators and culprits are brought to justice without any further delay. Since the Punjab police is a highly politicised body, there is no hope for a fair probe into the murder. Hence, a CBI inquiry should be ordered”, the Congress leader said while pointing out that now the SAD-BJP government should have no objections to this demand as the NDA government will be assuming power at the Centre.
