The opposition Congress on Tuesday said it would file a criminal case against the Parkash Singh Badal government for “theft” of Rs 12,000-crore foodgrains from the state’s godowns.
Designated by Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh to monitor developments related to the wheat scam, senior Congress leader Sunil Jakhar said they would file an FIR at the office of the state vigilance bureau at SAS Nagar on Wednesday.
“It is plain theft of food stocks. We will also meet the governor and seek an inquiry into whether food stocks were pilfered or false bills were raised without procurement. There should be a physical audit of food stocks as a scam of this nature could not have taken place without the connivance of the central agency, Food Corporation of India, with the state agencies. The investigation will expose the magnitude of the scam. The report of the comptroller and auditor general has highlighted how truck numbers carrying foodgrains do not exist. So it becomes a case of not just theft and misappropriation but also fraud,” Jakhar said.
While Amarinder has left for a tour of north America, the party’s high-level committee to be coordinated by senior vice-president Lal Singh will hold its first meeting on Wednesday to chalk out its programme. The committee, during the next 20 days, will monitor the procurement process in over 500 mandis across the state to ensure farmers that do not face any difficulty in selling off their produce and get the payment on time.
