Training their guns on the ruling party MLA from Moga, Joginder Pal Jain after he and his family were sentenced by the court, top Congress leaders on Tuesday asked businessman-turned-politician Jain as well as chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Badal to resign on moral grounds.

Lashing out at chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, senior Congress leaders demanded the resignation of Moga MLA Joginder Pal Jain who has been convicted by the court.

The Congress leaders also demanded strong legal action against some other Akali ministers and MLAs who were allegedly involved in drug trade and other anti-social activities in the past.

Harminder Singh Gill, general secretary, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, warned that if the Punjab government fails to show the door to ‘tainted’ ministers and MLAs, it would mean that government does not want to give justice to the people of Punjab.

“When Joginder Pal Jain had jumped into the SAD, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had said he was picking diamond-like leaders from the Congress but Sukhbir’s diamonds are being convicted one after other like Jain. What does Sukhbir want to say about this situation at the moment,” Gill asked.

He added that, “First of all, Jain should resign as legislator immediately on moral grounds and if he fails to do so, Parkash Singh Badal should throw him out of the SAD immediately.”

Malti Thapar, president, Punjab Mahila Congress, said, “The chief minister and deputy CM should resign as they are fully responsible for sheltering tainted ministers and MLAs. People want justice but Badals are not heeding. The court has sentenced Moga MLA Jain, therefore he should resign without delay.”

Senior Congress leader and former MLA Vijay Sathi, who was defeated by Jain in the Moga assembly by-election in 2013, said after the court’s decision Joginder Pal Jain should resign as MLA on moral grounds and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal should expel him from the party.

“Jain is the first politician in the Indian history who along with his two sons, daughter and wife was sentenced by the court due to Jain’s wrongdoing,” Sathi said.

Tara Singh Sandhu, former president of district Congress committee, said, “No doubt that Jain was Congress MLA but he jumped into the SAD after the 2012 assembly polls. At that time, he had thought that cases pending against him will be withdrawn by the government but all his planning has gone waste. Justice has been done, so he should resign.”
