Poor arrangements of water and air allegedly killed a Congress worker, 65, on Thursday during party vice-president Rahul Gandhi's rally here.
The autopsy on the body of Mukhtiar Singh of Kapial village was performed on Friday at the Sangrur Civil Hospital. His nephew, Harnek Singh, attributed his death to dehydration because of the lack of drinking-water arrangements and ventilation at the venue, in spite of sweltering heat.
In his brief address at Thursday's rally, former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh had rued the lack of drinking-water arrangements at the venue for the ceremony to lay the foundation stone of a cancer hospital here. State Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) secretary Jatinder Kalra said he had verified from police at the venue that the victim had been pleading for water before collapsing.
Kalra said he had written to the state and national human rights commission to take cognizance of the incident. Sangrur senior medical officer (SMO) Baldev Singh confirmed that preliminary investigations had suggested that the man had died of cardiac arrest caused by dehydration or closed environment at the venue.
