Congress activists, led by senior party leader Viney Mahajan, blocked the Pathankot-Jammu national highway at Sujanpur, causing traffic disruption for over three hours on the busy highway, in protest against alleged false cases registered against party workers on the polling day.

The party workers, who raised slogans against the police and local BJP MLA Dinesh Singh Babbu, alleged that during the polling on March 30, a BJP sarpanch had been stopping voters at Sujanpur and pressing them to cast their vote in favour of BJP nominee from Gurdaspur Vinod Khanna.

Viney Mahajan claimed that after some Congress workers complained to the presiding officer against the woman sarpanch, he sent her away from the spot. However, keeping the grudge alive, the sarpanch, along with some of her party colleagues, picked up a quarrel with the Congress workers and had framed a case against the latter. He said that on the behest of the local MLA, police were harassing the Congress workers.

Mahajan claimed that after the Sunday’s protest, police have assured them that the members of the other party would also be booked in the case and that they lifted the blockade only after this assurance. “We would resume our stir if poilce fail to provide us justice”, he added.
