Rising above factional differences, the Congress rank and file gave a rousing welcome to Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader and the party nominee from Ferozepur parliamentary seat Sunil Jakhar on his arrival from New Delhi at Abohar, a subdivision of Fazilka, on Thursday.
Those who were present on the occasion included former CPS Mohinder Kumar Rinwa, who also fought the last assembly polls as party nominee from Fazilka; former MLA from Malout Nathu Ram, Giri Raj Rajora and Malkiat Singh Heera, who had unsuccessfully contested the polls from Balluana and Jalalabad assembly constituencies.
Amid heavy presence of supporters, Sunil Jakhar lashed out at BJP and other opposition parties for targeting Manmohan Singh and charged that NDA constituents were describing Dr Singh as an unsuccessful prime minister on baseless grounds.
Lambasting Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal for claiming credit for the welfare schemes funded by the union government, Jakhar dared the father-son duo for an open debate over their performance.
He said Badal's ‘sangat darshan’ programmes speak of a feudal approach since emperors had been holding such darbars in the pre-Independence era.
He also blamed Badals for allegedly promoting druglords and projecting themselves as political lords over the past seven years. He criticised Gubhaya for dumping long- awaited railway overbridge project here since his name was not engraved on the foundation stone. "The RoB was sanctioned by the union railway minister and the CM sanctioned funds on my request,” Jakhar said.
