In the annual General election of Rajindra Gymkhana and Mahendra Club (RGMC), the Congress party backed JPS Walia and Vipin Sharma group, made a clean sweep by defeating the Shiromani Akali Dal backed Kuldeep Singh Bhullar and Harbaksh Chahal group.
In this keenly contested election, Vipin Sharma backed group’s Dr. JPS Walia was re-elected as President, while Harpreet Sandhu was elected as a new secretary of Club. Walia defeated Bhullar, while Sandhu defeated SAD’s sitting councilor Harbaksh Chahal. Apart from these post, the group also all top post including Vice president, Joint Secretary and Treasurer. Vinod Dhundia was elected as Vice president, Rajinder Dhodi elected as Joint Secretary and Amarinder Pabla elected as treasure.
The counting for the seven posts of executive members was going on till filing of report.
This year Club Elections, which taken place after a gap of five years, remains talk of town, because of open Support of Youth Akali Dal Malwa Zone President Harpal Juneja to Bhullar group, the defeat has given a setback to latter also, as his entire team was rejected by club members, which includes who’s who of the city.
In view of open support of Akali Dal to Bhullar group, the Congress has also backed the candidature of Walia and other candidates of Vipin Sharma Group. Vipin Sharma this year has chose to stay out of contest, but fielded his group in association with Walia, Dr. Sudhir and others.
Elated over the victory, Vipin Sharma, the outgoing secretary said that he is elated that his entire group has swept the elections. “The thumping victory of our group has indicated that the club members have welcomed the works carried out by our team. I am thankful to Patialvis for this support and new team will further work hard to provide better family atmosphere in the club”, he added.
After being re-elected as Club President, Dr. JPS Walia said that the huge victory has given a huge responsibility on our shoulders to provide best services to club members.

Rajindra Gymkhana & Mahindra Club-The Heritage Located in pristine, lush green Baradari Gardens, in the heart of the Patiala city was built in 1890s. It resembles the pavilion of the Oval Cricet Ground, England. This building was converted intoRajindra Gymkhana and Mahindra Club (RGMC) under the stewardship of the royal family of Patiala. Subsequently, democratically elected teams were taking over reins. The legend goes that the famous ‘Patiala Peg’ term was first coined here, Former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, his wife Preneet Kaur and mother Mohinder Kaur and all other members of the Patiala royal family are members of the club.
