A day after high drama was witnessed in the budget meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar (MCJ), Congress councillors on Monday accused mayor Sunil Jyoti of being involved in corruption. The opposition councillors held a meeting in the House and took a serious note of the mayor's move to pass the budget in just five seconds.
"He left the meeting as a thief runs after committing crime. What is the reason behind this? The mayor must clarify. He is involved in corruption and this is the reason he was not ready to discuss the budget proposals with councillors," said Jagdish Raj, leader of opposition in the House.
The councillors alleged that the mayor was feeling nervous to come in front of them as he had not made any development in the city in the last one-and-a-half-year tenure of the present civic body.District Congress president (urban) Rajinder Berry alleged that the mayor had violated all the guidelines mentioned in the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976.
"As per the Act, it is mandatory to have a general house meeting every month. But he failed to do it. During his 18-month tenure, only five meetings have been conducted," said Beri.
Jagdish Raj alleged that the mayor was involved in corruption in repairing of road. The mayor, he said, was claiming that Rs 36 crore had been spent on road construction whereas Rs 13 crore were spent on patchwork in the city. "Where are those roads? Not even a single road has been repaired properly. Can he clarify where this money has been spent," he said.Surinder Kaur, councilor from ward 58, said it was the worst picture of the city she had ever seen."The mayor is just showing development through laying foundation stones in the city. But there is not even a single project which has been started yet," she said.
