The Congress has demanded a CBI probe into the murder case of Parampreet Kaur, the 'daughter-in-law' of mayor Jaspal Pardhan, saying they had no faith in Punjab Police, who had bailed out Akali leaders in all high-profile cases.

The party said it would raise the matter in the assembly session, if the government failed to do justice to the bereaved family.

At the 'bhog' ceremony of late Parampreet Kaur, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) vice-president Lal Singh, along with MLA Hardial Singh Kamboj and a battery of Congressmen, paid tributes to the departed soul and extended condolence on behalf of Patiala MP and minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur, who is on a foreign visit currently.
Congress and the family members of the victim have been demanding Pardhan's arrest, who has gone into hiding since the registration of the case.

Using the occasion to launch a frontal attack on the SAD-BJP government, the PPCC vice-president said that it was ironical that instead of serving the public, the Akalis were indulging in criminal activities. He pointed to the murder of an assistant sub-inspector at Amritsar, the slapping of policemen at Gurdaspur, the incidents where an SHO had been beaten in Pataila and an SSP was beaten at Ludhiana and the Shruti kidnapping case of Faridkot to underscore the poor law and order situation of the state and Akali contribution to it.

"How can we expect a fair probe, when the police is not safe?" he asked.

He said the police had become a puppet in the hands of the Akali Dal, and thus could not be trusted to deliver justice.

The Congress leaders promised the bereaved family that the party would support them in their fight for justice.

Meanwhile, the special investigation team (SIT) on Wednesday grilled the two accused it had arrested, during their police custody. The main focus of the questioning was to know the reason behind the murder, said an SIT member.
