The Congress faced a severe setback today when several prominent leaders from Ward No. 17 and Ward No. 18 joined Shiromani Akali Dal Badal. The by-election of ward no. 17 has been scheduled to be held during first week of June along with municipal corporation elections.

The seat got vacant after the demise of Satish Behl, a Congress councillor.

In a function held today, Lakhbir Singh Gill, Harpreet Singh Roni, Swaran Singh Sehgal, Paramjeet Singh and many other Congress workers joined hands with SAD in the presence of former Akali MLA and incharge of Kapurthala constituency Sarabjeet Singh Makkar.

"It is the victory of the policies of SAD government. People feel that only SAD is thinking about their development which is why these Congress workers have joined us," revealed Makkar adding that, "more workers will join us in the coming days."

Congress has declared Girish Bhasin as its candidate and SAD/BJP has yet to announce its candidate.

"Such things are routine in politics these days. People come and go but at the time of polling people will surely vote for Congress as we have ensured development for them," said Rana Gurjit Singh, congress MLA.
