Four persons, who looted and murdered District Congress Committee chief Rajender Verma, 60, near Toose village at Sudhar on Monday evening, were arrested here on Tuesday.
The accused have been identified as Varinder Singh of Seehanwala of Patiala, Gurmeet Singh of Naiwal village of Barnala, Darshi of Chauhanke village of Barnala and Bhola of Thikriwal. The police have also recovered three weapons, including Verma’s licensee revolver, the looted cash and jewellery, from their possession. The police have also seized the car that was used in the crime.
Arpit Shukla, inspector general (IG), Jalandhar (Zone-2), said, “Hours after recovering Verma’s body, police have solved the murder case. On Monday night, Verma’s driver Monu called police that some persons kidnapped Verma from near Toose village.”
His son Mohit Kumar Resident of Raghubir Park near Chandar Nagar, Verma had gone to Barnala for business purposes in his Innova on Monday. He was also carrying cash and gold.
In his complaint, he told police that on Monday evening, when they were returning to Ludhiana, car intercepted them near Toose village. Suddenly, four persons, including three turbaned men alighted from the car. They pushed him out of the car and kidnapped Verma in his car. The accused drove away towards Sudhar. Following which, he sounded the family as well as police.”
Shukla said, “Following this, the police reached the spot and initiated investigation. On Tuesday morning, Innova was found abandoned in Dadhahur village near canal and Verma’s body was recovered from it. The killers had hacked him to death with sharp-edged weapons.”
Rajinder was a medical practitioner and used to a run homoeopathy clinic, and also helped his son Mohit Kumar Verma in his jewellery business at Sarafa Bazar in Ludhiana.
Shukla, who was stationed at Jagraon for investigation from Monday evening, probed the matter on his own. “The police have arrested the accused from their respective places. The accused have confessed to their crime,” Shukla said.
The IG said, “Accused Gurmeet Singh was aware of the fact that Verma used to go to Barnala in relation to his business, and used to carry gold and cash with him. The accused had also attempted loot on Verma around two years ago, but the family had not informed the police about it. The accused committed the crime following an evil designed conspiracy.”
Sarafa market remained closed
Pall of gloom descended in the area, as the news of killing of Verma reached city. After brutal murder of Verma jewelers of Sarafa Bazar, New Sarafa Bazar and Kharadiyan Bazar have closed their shops and staged protest. Swarnkar Sangh Chairman Ratan Verma, New Sarafa Bazar Jewelers Association president Sarjivan Dhir, Ghas Mandi Bazar association President Manoj Bhandhari demanded security for jewelers.
