sub-tehsil status

The in-principle approval to grant of sub-tehsil status to Sanaur town in Patiala district by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday has not gone down well with the state Congress unit. Not because the Congress is opposed to the status, but because the government ignored the elected representative of the constituency while taking this decision.

Congress' Lal Singh represents Sanaur, but he was not invited to the meeting where the plan to develop his constituency was being discussed. However, his rival SAD leader Tejinder Pal Singh Sandhu figured prominently in the high-powered meeting.

Lal Singh alleged that the chief minister was toeing the undemocratic line by ignoring the elected representatives. "The CM is a seasoned leader and he should have invited me for discussion, as I am the elected leader of the constituency. By not involving me, the CM has shown disrespect to the citizens of Sanaur," Lal Singh said. He questioned the authority of Sandhu in attending the meeting after being rejected by the voters of Sanaur.

He said the party would raise this issue in the ensuing assembly session and oppose the trend of involving SAD-BJP in-charges at the cost of Congress MLAs.

Ironically, last week Fatehgarh Sahib MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra had opposed such a move when the CM held a meeting with Prem Singh Chandumajra for Rajpura thermal plant railway line.

Defending the move, Sandhu said after losing the assembly polls, the dreams of Lal Singh to become deputy CM had been shattered and he has been missing from the constituency. "As I have promised overall development of the constituency, I am taking the initiative. Lal Singh has been elected five times from this seat, but has failed to bring a single project. However, in less than one year, I have brought several development projects and this is giving sleepless nights to the Congress leader. Rather than criticise, Lal Singh should welcome my initiatives for the area. By opposing it, he is opposing the development of the area," Sandhu said.

Meanwhile, responding to the demands raised by Sandhu during the meeting, the chief minister asked the financial commissioner revenue to complete the required formalities to declare Sanaur as sub-tehsil at the earliest. Badal also asked the principal secretary, technical education, to set up a skill development centre at Sanaur to train youth for employment.

Prominent among others present in the meeting were financial commissioner revenue NS Kang, principal secretary technical education & industrial training SS Channy, principal secretary health & family welfare Vinni Mahajan, director technical education B.Purshartha, director-cum-secretary industries Vikas Partap and Patiala deputy commissioner GK Singh.
