With an aim to unite its cadre, the Congress party will be holding a day-long session here on July 10. It will be for the first time that the party will be organising the session in Hamirpur, which is strong fort of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by its leader Prem Kumar Dhumal.
After observing thirty months of rule in the adjoining Una district, the Congress is now planning to concentrate on Hamirpur. The BJP has four out of five MLAs in the state assembly from the district, including former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. Lone Congress party MLA Inder Dutt Lakhanpal hails from Badsar area of the district.
Naresh Thakur, district Congress president, told HT on Friday that the meeting would be held at the Bachat Bhawan. It would be attended by all members of the party's working committee, including Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, chief minister Virbhadra Singh, state-level leaders of all frontal organisations and presidents and general secretaries of all district Congress committees.
It will be for the first time that office-bearers of the new district-level committees of Kangra and Mandi will also take part in the meeting.
Thakur said that preparations for the meeting were on and the stage for the show would be ready one day before the meeting. Sources told HT that besides finalising strategy for the upcoming panchayati raj elections, to be held in December, the party would also finalise its strategy to deal with the BJP in its strong holds.
When contacted, Sukhu said the main focus was to expose "evil designs of the BJP and to finalise a perfect strategy of the party to oust BJP". He was optimistic that the party would sweep the PRI elections in the state.
The state party chief said the state government was working in unison with the party leadership for helping the people of the state to march ahead in every field of life, despite hurdles being created by the BJP that was in power at the Centre.
