While the deadline to complete the construction work at the boys hostel of SCD Government College will come to an end on January 31, the boys hostel is still under construction.

The construction work started in April this year. The hostel will consist of 48 rooms and a three-storied building is under construction. The hostel building will also have an elevator for the convenience of the students.

During a visit to the hostel, it was found that the walls are not plastered and the construction of warden house is yet to start. Interestingly, there is an incomplete boundary wall at the back side of the hostel which has access to the college and the girls hostel. When asked about the same, one the worker on site said, “We are not going to complete the boundary wall as there are no instructions to do so.”It is pertinent to mention that the deadline to complete the construction work has been changed thrice previously; earlier it was August 30 but due to non-completion of work, authorities set the deadline to finish the work on November 30. Now the deadline to complete the work is January 31.

Principal of the college, Dharam Singh Sandhu, said, “For the security of the students, we will ask the public works department to construct the remaining boundary wall. I have visited the hostel and the construction is still on. If the department will hand over the building to us by January end, even the warden residence needs to be completed. As we can’t shift the boys alone in the hostel as construction of the warden residence is yet to start.”

Rajinder Kumar, executive engineer, PWD department (building and roads), said, “We need funds to build the warden’s house and we have given an estimate to the authorities, so as soon as we get funds we will start the construction of the residence. The structure of the building is ready, flooring is done and we are plastering the walls. So it will be ready by the end of January.”
