Activists of the Bharat Nirman Majdoor Union on Tuesday staged a protest against alleged black marketing of sand in Punjab, which was resulting in high prices of sand.
Addressing the workers, union leader Ram Nath Singh said the black marketing of sand on directions of sand mafia was resulting in high prices of sand, which in turn was affecting construction works adversely.
He said lakhs of construction workers had been jobless owing to the prevailing situation, which had made it tough for their families to survive.
The seriousness of situation could be gauged from the fact that huge stocks of bricks were laying in brick kilns due to unavailability of sand in the market, he claimed.
The protest was staged in front of the Gate Number 2 of Punjab Agricultural University, as president of the Brick Kiln Owners Association Kuldip Singh Makkar, father of Punteet Singh Makkar (who has been allotted mining work in Parjian Biharipur) was attending a meeting in a hotel there.
