Mandi district consumer forum presiding officer JN Yadav and member Rama Verma on Tuesday held Suket Hospital, Sundar Nagar, guilty of negligence in treatment of a woman, who suffered for more than five years after undergoing an abdomen surgery there.
Complainant Jyoti Devi of Samoh village of Jhanduta area in Bilaspur district informed the consumer forum that she underwent an operation after sever abdomen pain at Suket Hospital five years back, but she could not get rid of pain. Dr Anil Chauhan, who had operated her, once again admitted her at the hospital for a treatment, but Jyoti did not get relief from the pain.
In her complaint, Jyoti said later she was admitted at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, where doctors informed her that the doctor, who had operated her, had left a needle inside her abdomen, which was causing her infection and sever pain. Jyoti bore with the pain for more than five years before moving the PGIMER.
The consumer forum found the Suket Hospital managing director and senior surgeon, Dr Anil Chauhan, guilty of negligence, but as the hospital was insured, the forum ordered New India Insurance Company to pay Rs 5 lakh with interest to the complainant and ordered Dr Chauhan to pay Rs 3,000 to the complainant as legal expenses.
A number of Consumer Forum Awareness Societies, which observed National Consumer Day on Tuesday, hailed the judgment.
