Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has miserably failed in preventing the residents from getting fleeced by the parking contractors along Ferozepur Road. It is also a failure of the tehbazari wing, as it has not been able to stop the contractor from charging more from the visitors.

MC allows these contractors to charge Rs 15 for parking the vehicle for the first hour, whereas another Rs 15 for two hours of parking (a total of Rs 30). But employees of these contractors at the parking lot, especially in front of Silver Arc mall charge Rs 30 as soon as the car is parked at the site. This is a gross violation of the orders of the MC.

Punjab and Harayana high court had ordered that the parking lots along Ferozepur Road should be made operational, so that the parking on service lanes along the road could be ended.

LRY construction contractor Raju has been continuously fleecing the visitors, who park their vehicles in front of Silver Arc mall, but the MC has remained a mute spectator to the problem.

Earlier the rate of parking for the first hour was Rs 10 and Rs 20 for second hour, but the rate for the first hour was increased partially, so that fleecing could be ended. Contractors of these parking lots have claimed that they would not be able to recover the cost of tender by charging Rs 10 for the first hour.

However, residents are a harried lot, as the tehbazari wing failed to initiate action against the contractors. Additional commissioner Devinder Singh who heads the wing earlier planned to cancel the contract of LRY construction, but he failed in his efforts due to some unknown reasons.

When the HT team visited the parking lot managed by LRY, it found gross discrepancies in the charging of parking fee. The visitors were forced to pay Rs 30 even for the first hour and were also misbehaved with by the employees of the contractors. There was a sense of insecurity among women visiting the parking lot as the employees were even talking rudely with them.

Sapna Sharma, a bank employee, who had come to the parking lot in front of Silver Arc mall along with her 8 son, said the employees of the contractor were more like goons. “There is no sense of security at this parking lot. It seems that the MC has let loose a group of goons to fleece residents. They charged Rs 30 from me for parking the vehicle for 20 minutes,” said Sharma.

While LRY contractor Raju said the amount decided by the MC was being charged from the visitors. “We do not charge more than what is allowed,” said Raju.

Jasdev Sekhon who is the superintendent of tehbazari wing of MC, said action would be taken against the contractor for violating norms.
