The Nakodar city police on Tuesday booked Ranno, a contestant for the post of panch from ward no 4 in Shankar village, and her two accomplices for allegedly disclosing material information in the nomination papers.

City SHO Subhash Bath said that the case had been registered after Nakodar sub division magistrate HS Dhailwal forwarded them orders from the DC-cum DEO Shruti Singh. Singh had sought a report from the election officials on the June 30 report published in HT in thus regard.

The SHO added that Ranno did not give any information on cases registered against her in nomination papers and skipped mentioning the sentence that she had served. Bath said that the convicted smuggler had knowingly submitted a false declaration before the returning officer of zone no 8 and two other Shankar village residents Jaspal Singh and Sandeep Singh connived with her in verifying her nomination papers as witnesses.

He said a case under sections 193 (punishment for false evidence) 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 420(cheating) of the IPC and Section 125-A of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951, had been registered against the accused.

She had been sentenced to 10-year jail and also fined Rs. 1 lakh in a case of poppy husk smuggling, after being caught with the 111 kg of contraband in August 2009. She is on bail and her appeal against the conviction is pending.

She had also been convicted in other cases of the NDPS Act. Her house at Shankar village had been attached and her bank account at the Union Bank branch in Shankar has also been attached.
