Ranno, a candidate for the post of panch from ward number 4 in Shankar village, gave no information on cases registered against her in nomination papers, returning officer of zone number 8, Harpal Singh has said.
He added that she gave no such information in her self-declaration form, attached with the nomination document and also skipped mentioning anything on the sentence that she had served. The RO said that the nomination documents have been sent to Nakodar SDM for action.
SDM Hardeep Singh Dhaliwal said that he had sent the file of nomination paper of Ranno to the deputy superintendent of police HPS Parmar for taking action.
Legal experts said on Monday that criminal action could be initiated against the candidate for filing false information before the electoral authorities, while filing nominations for the panchayat elections. They said all indication suggested that the convicted smugger and resident of Shankar village had knowingly submitted false declaration before the returning officer of zone no. 8.
They said that this was an offence under Section 177 (furnishing false information) of the IPC and was punishable with an imprisonment of six months and fine, which may extend up to Rs 100 or both.
SHO DS Gill has previously confirmed that four cases under the NDPS Act had been registered against Ranno and she had been convicted in all.
She had awarded sentences ranging from 45 days to 10 years in jail and had been fined more than Rs 1 lakh.
