A policemen deployed as a gunman with the senior superintendent of police (vigilance), Bathinda range, was killed and the SSP and two other policemen had a narrow escape when an eucalyptus tree from inside the premises of the official residence of the deputy commissioner fell on the police official's official vehicle outside the circuit house near the mini-secretariat here on Monday evening.
The victim was identified as head constable Tejpal Singh, 42, a resident of Bhagu village. The incident took place around 5pm when SSP Sukdhev Singh Chahal along with his two gunmen was going to his residence.
The eucalyptus tree fell of the official Scorpio SUV due to high-velocity winds. Tejpal suffered injuries on his neck. He was rushed to the civil hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
2 KILLED IN ACCIDENT
Meanwhile, two persons, including a child, were killed and three others sustained injuries on Sunday night when the car they were travelling in was hit by an unknown vehicle on the Tapa-Rampura road. The victims were identified as four-year-old Sehwag Singh and Jasvir Singh. The ill-fated vehicle was on its way from Tapa in Barnala district to Rampura Phul when the accident took place around 9pm. The child died on the spot while Jasvir Singh was referred to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana where he succumbed to injuries.
The police have booked the driver of the unknown vehicle under Section 304-A of the India penal code for causing death due to negligence.
