A Punjab Police head constable has been arrested for allegedly misbehaving with a teenaged girl in the Katra Ahluwalia bazaar here on Saturday.

Amritsar police commissioner Ram Singh said the accused, Gurpinder Singh, had been placed under suspension.

Giving details, E division police station SHO inspector Sukhwinder Randhawa said, "We got a complaint that the head constable allegedly stopped the girl and tried to hold her arm. Some people in the bazaar complained that he was drunk. We have conducted his medical examination."

A case under sections 354 (molestation), 341 and 506 of the IPC has been registered against Gurpinder at the E division police station.

People in the market cornered the head constable and rebuked him while he was allegedly misbehaving with the girl and asking for her father's phone number.

Amritsar Tea Traders' Association president Rajinder Kumar Goel said, "I witnessed the incident. It was a very shameful act."

A relative of the girl demanded strict action against the head constable.
