Though it is the duty of the police to ensure justice to victims, contradicting the moral conduct of the department a sub-inspector deputed as SHO, city police station, Fazilka, was allegedly found using a luxury car for the past nine months since it was stolen from the Basant City area of Ludhiana, instead of returning it to the owner.
The car owner had a conversation with Fazilka SSP Amar Singh Chahal and Ludhiana police commissioner Ishwar Singh after he came to know of the truth about his car. The officials expressed their concern over the issue and directed subordinates to initiate a probe into the matter.
The Skoda Fabia car in question belongs to Vinay Khurana of Basant City and was stolen from outside his house on November 30 last. He had bought the car on finance a year ago from the date it was stolen. He got registered a complaint in this regard against an unidentified suspect with the Sadar police station.
“The keys of the car had gone missing a week before the vehicle was stolen. The police had questioned our drivers and some other people, but to no avail,” said Khurana.
“As a long time passed and I had lost the hope of getting the car back, suddenly two days ago I received a call on my mobile phone from a person. The caller identified himself as a policeman deputed in Fazilka and said he had information about the car. He said the car was found abandoned in Fazilka two-three days after it was stolen. Rather than informing the department, SHO sub-inspector Sukhdev Singh took possession of the car and started using it,” he added.
Khurana said it was really shocking to know that instead of informing him about the car, the SHO was using it for the past nine months. He immediately took up the matter with Fazilka SSP Amar Singh Chahal and Ludhiana police commissioner Ishwar Singh. Acting swiftly, the Ludhiana police located the car. The police confirmed to Khurana that the car was with the Fazilka SHO and that he had agreed to return it.
“I will not spare the SHO. The car contained all documents, including a packet of my visiting cards. The SHO could have contacted him had he been interested in returning the car. As the car was financed, I am paying the installments to the bank from the past nine months, while the SHO is enjoying a free ride,” rued Khurana.
Ludhiana Sadar SHO sub-inspector Harinder Singh said they have got the information that the stolen car was in the possession of a Fazilka policeman. A police party would conduct a raid on Tuesday in Fazilka to recover the car.
When contacted, Fazilka SSP Amar Singh Chahal said someone had informed him about the car incident on phone, but as he was busy to resolve the issue of the Jalalabad truck union he could not verify the matter. The SSP added that he would verify the matter and would not spare any cop found guilty.
