Head constable Narinder Singh was crushed under a speeding car that was chased by a police team at Ghoman village, 55km from Gurdaspur. Police have booked five persons on charge of murder.
One Manpreet Singh of Ghoman had complained to police that Dakoha villager Arwinder Singh had borrowed his mobile phone about a month ago. Despite repeated requests, Arwinder was allegedly not returning the phone and was threatening to kill him, he said.
Arwinder, Ajaypal Singh, Manjinder Singh and two unidentified persons, armed with sharp-edged weapons, were moving in the former's car (PB-18Q-6141) outside his house and challenging him on phone to come out, the complainant said.
A police party comprising ASI Jaspal Singh, head constables Surinder Singh, Sukhwinder Singh and Narinder Singh along with the complainant rushed to Arwinder's house at Dakoha village on Friday night.
While police were looking for him, they found his car parked near Guru Nanak Hospital at Ghoman on the Ghoman-Srihargobindpur road.
On seeing police, Ajaypal Singh, who was at the wheel, tried to start the car. Head constable Narinder Singh signaled him to stop, but Arwinder reportedly asked Ajaypal to run over the policeman. Narinder Singh was crushed under the speeding car.
Later, police said, the car collided with an unidentified vehicle coming from the Srihargobindpur side and got damaged. Arwinder Singh and his accomplices abandoned the car and fled under the cover of darkness.
A case under Sections 302, 307, 427, 186, 148 and 149 of the IPC has been registered against Ajaypal Singh of Batala, Manjinder Singh Attepur, Arwinder Singh and two unidentified people.
