The police on Wednesday suspended a head constable allegedly involved in beating up Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) officials on Tuesday evening in Haibowal area.

A team, including sub-divisional officer (SDO) Parminder Singh and executive engineer Sandeep Garg, was visiting the area near Ranjodh Park where head constable Harjit Singh resides.
The PSPCL team smelled a rat regarding an illegal connection (kundi connection) that the cop was using and tried taking a video of the same.

Harjit tried removing the connection but failed to do so before he was recorded. Following this, Harjit allegedly started thrashing the officials in the presence of other residents.
After the incident, the PSPCL staff went on a strike and demanded immediate action against the constable.

Later, the police commissioner intervened into the matter and suspended the head constable. A case by PSPCL also imposed a penalty of Rs 65,267 on Harjit Singh.

The corporation has also demanded that the erring police official should be arrested for beating senior officials. But Harjit was suspended and is presently absconding.

Rachpal Singh, chief engineer, PSPCL, said the police had assured that strict action would be taken against the constable.

“The illegal connection to Harjit Singh’s house is under Paramjit Kaur’s name. Officials were forced to strike but after the police suspended the accused, the protest has been called off,” said the chief engineer.

Inspector Amarjit Singh said so far no arrest has been made in the case but an FIR has been lodged against the accused.
