The city police have booked three head constables and a jail inmate on charges of smuggling liquor into the Amritsar Central Jail through cartons of juice.

During a raid in the jail on Tuesday, the police have recovered three cartons of a popular juice brand containing liquor and registered a case in this regard against the accused on the basis of the complaint of the superintendent, Central Jail.

The accused have been identified as undertrial Paramjit Singh, a resident of village Dhalla Havailian and head constables Major Singh, Resham Singh and Satnam Singh.

The accused have been booked under sections 61/1/14 of the Excise Act and 42 of the Prisoners Act at the Cantonment police atation.

SI Prabhjot Singh, incharge, Gumtala police post, said, "During investigations it came to the fore that the accused undertrial had managed to smuggle liquor in juice cartons with the connivance of the three head constables. He said efforts were being made to arrest the three head constables while the accused undertrial is already in jail.

Despite the installation of an x-ray machine and repeated appeals to the jail inmates to shun drugs and narcotics, the smuggling of narcotics and mobile sets continues unabated in the Amritsar Central Jail.

While instances of smuggling of liquor, drugs and mobile phones into the jail are often attributed to the kin and friends of the inmates, who come to visit them in the jail, the fresh development has brought to the fore the connivance of cops with the inmates in this regard.

The recurrent recoveries of mobile phones and narcotics from the jail inmates during routine checking also point towards such a nexus.
