A couple who had reportedly gone to immerse some stuff in flowing water, drowned in Unchi Bassi river near Dasuya on Saturday. The woman's body was found soon, but the search for her husband was on till late evening. The deceased have been identified as Sukhdev Singh (45), a private security guard and his wife Joginder Kaur (42). They hailed from Sajjna village.

Sources said the couple and their daughter had gone to immerse certain objects in the water in the morning. While doing so, Joginder Kaur slipped and fell into the canal. When she shouted, her husband jumped into the river; he also drowned. Their daughter raised an alarm, at which, a passer-by dived into the river and retrieved the woman's body, but the man had probably been swept far away.

The police did not make much effort to locate the missing man as all officials remained busy with the visit of a senior. A head constable reached the spot and completed formalities of the post mortem.
