A couple from Bhangwan village drowned in the Upper Bari Doab canal at Ghazikot village 8 km from here on Wednesday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Amanat Masih,50 and his wife Shabbi,45.
Amanat Masih's uncle Niamat Masih told Hindustan Times that Shabbi was mentally sick as she had undergone two unsuccessful operations of tumour.
He said that this morning at about 6.30 am Shabbi left her house in Bhangwan village, which is about 1.5 km from the Ghazikot bridge.
Amanat, a daily wage laborer, went out to look for her. He reportedly saw Shabbi jumping into the water on reaching the canal bridge at Ghazikot.
Amanat also jumped into the canal in an attempt to save his wife. Both of them did not know how to swim.When the police found out about the drowning incident, they requested the district administration to arrange for divers to retrieve the bodies.
Deputy commissioner Abhinav Trikha called the divers from Bamial and they first fished out the body of the woman at about 9.00 am. The husband's body was recovered at 11.30am, said Gurdaspur SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor.
