In a bizarre incident, a couple left behind a dead newborn at the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Friday.

According to hospital staff, an unidentified man, who seemed to be around 25 years old, and a woman, aged around 35, came to the hospital on Friday with an unconscious newborn boy. They complained that the newborn was facing difficulty in breathing. When the staff attended to the child, they declared him brought dead.

Dr Shilpa, who was on duty, said the case was referred from one Raja Hospital. She added that when she told the couple that the child was dead, they left the ward saying that they would be back after informing their relatives who were standing outside, but never came back.

Thereafter, the Division Number 3 police were informed and a case under section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under 12 years, by parent or person having care of it) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) was registered against the unidentified couple.

The hospital staff has given the police the hospital's CCTV footage wherein faces of the couple are clearly visible.

Inspector Rajinder Kumar, SHO at Division Number 3 police station, said the police had got some clues about the accused and would arrest them soon.
