The Division Number 1 police arrested a Moga resident and his wife for duping the residents on the pretext of marriage on Saturday. The accused used to introduce his wife as his divorcee sister-in-law (wife's sister) and used to contact widowers and divorcees by reading advertisements in matrimonial columns for remarriage. Later, they used to take money from the people by making excuses.
The couple is said to have duped more than 20 people. On Saturday when they had come to Ludhiana to dupe another man, the police arrested the couple. The accused have been identified as Raj Kumar alias Rajvir Arora of Pahada Chowk of Moga and his wife Pooja Arora. The accused are in their early 30s.
A case under Sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC has been registered against the accused on the complaint of Krishan Sharma of Laxmi Nagar, Haibowal. The police produced the accused before the court on Sunday and got them on police remand for one day.
The accused had contacted Sharma after reading an advertisement in a newspaper. They called Sharma to Bhadaur House. Finding the matter fishy, Sharma informed the police following which the accused were arrested.
Division Number 1 SHO,Inspector Dharampal said accused Raj Kumar used to introduce his wife Pooja as his divorcee sister-in-law to the widowers and divorcees. They used to agree immediately for marriage after meeting the men.
Later, the couple used to contact their targets through phone, saying that they have been stuck in a problem and need money. The people used to lend them money, following which the couple used to change their mobile numbers.
The SHO said more information is expected to surface during interrogation.
