Couple held for fraud worth Rs 5 crore

A travel agent couple, said to have duped several people on the pretext of sending them abroad, landed in police net late on Friday evening.

A travel agent couple, said to have duped several people on the pretext of sending them abroad, landed in police net late on Friday evening.

The Division Number 6 police arrested them at Jalandhar Bypass.According to police officials, the accused have duped people of over rs 5 crore on the pretext of sending them abroad.

The accused have been identified as Pritpal Singh (35) of Bajra village and his wife Jaspreet Kaur (32). They were produced in the court on Saturday and were sent in poilce custody for two days.

Yielding about the arrest, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP, central) Satish Malhotra said the accused opened two offices in the name of Immigration Experts at Cheema Chowk in Ludhiana and Mohali around two years ago. They took a huge sum of money from several people, promising to send them abroad but allegedly failed to keep their promise.

Division Number 6 SHO, Inspector Kanwarjit Singh said atleast 11 FIRs have been registered against the accused at his police station. Four cases have been registered against the couple in Mohali and one in Moga. The accused were evading arrest for long.

The SHO said more information has been expected to surface while interrogation.
